Krousonas: On Satan’s Trail. The director Vicky Arvelaki and the chief editor-script writer Katerina Mpikaki approached the events from the perspective of a specific story. This makes this documentary quite unique, as it proves how the small events and stories are like sparks that eventually lead to the flames everyone sees.
Their documentary surprises with its depth. It addresses the division within Greece before World War II started. It also addresses how it affected Cretans, its implications during the invasion, and the resistance that followed.
Focusing on the village of Kroussonas and the rebels led by Captain Antonios Grigorakis (also known as Satanas), it delves deep into light and darkness. We all celebrate the rebels as heroes. This movie reminds us how they and their families suffered, revealing how the rebels fought against all odds and often lost everything, from their families being executed to them losing their own lives.
It also uncovers painful stories for those who sided with the invaders. This documentary sheds light on both sides of history. It reveals things we need to know so they are never repeated. It manages to offer more than just facts. It is a conversation starter, bringing to mind the following words by Nikos Kazantzakis, “The star dies, but the light never dies; such also is the cry of freedom.”
